The city dominates the valley below, so beautiful that Francis famously exclaimed, “Nihil iucundius vidi valle mea Spoletana” (“I have never seen a valley more beautiful mine of Spoleto”), a sentiment one can understand when gazing upon the town and plain from the Rocca Albornoziana overlook.
The sights in Spoleto are too numerous to list here, but we must mention the 12th century Cathedral and its dramatic Piazza, and the Medieval Ponte dei Torri, which bridges Spoleto and Monteluco. Along the route towards Poreta, the Longobard Basilica di San Salvatore, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worth a visit.
