The abbey is not along Saint Francis’ Way, but the side trip from Macenano will not leave you disappointed. This church is one of the most important monuments in the Valnerina and was built during the Longobard period (between the 8th and 11th centuries) by Duke Faroaldo II, who, after becoming a monk, died and was buried here. The abbey subsequently became mausoleum for the Longobard dukes of Spoleto. Inside you can admire beautiful Roman sarcophagi and an exceptional Longobard relief.
