This church is a short distance from the route of Saint Francis’ Way before Trevi and is the spot where the temptation of Saint Francis took place during a night in which he had stopped here to pray. Here is also where Friar Pacifico had his vision of the vacant throne, lost to Lucifer and destined to Francis (FF 707; 1111). This episode in the life of Francis is among those depicted by Giotto in his fresco cycle in the Upper Church of the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi.
Inside, there is the wooden cross where, according to local legend, Saint Francis prayed. For visiting hours, telephone the parish priest: 0742 78433. One interesting fact: the name “Bovara” derives from an ancient pagan tradition of purifying oxen – bovis – in the waters of the Clitunno before sacrificing them to the gods.
