This town, perched on a hilltop over the Valle Spoletana, was admired by Leopardi for its beauty and offers a number of pleasant discoveries for lovers of art and culture. The Chiesa di San Francesco, where the saint passed in 1213, is now a museum of art and “Olive Culture” and holds a rich collection of paintings, frescoes, and a number of interesting burial monuments. The Chiesa di Sant’Emiliano and the Convento di San Martino are also worth a visit. The Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime, along the route of Saint Francis’ Way, was built to hold a miraculous image of the Madonna and is an excellent example the characteristic of many monuments in the land of Francis: outward simplicity belying great treasures inside – in this instance, masterpieces by Perugino and dello Spagna.
