The name of Monte Santo, or Holy Mount, near Citerna is testament of local devotion for Saint Francis. The Franciscan Sources recount that a large group had gathered on the hilltop outside of town to listen to the monk from Assisi. Laying his hand on an oak tree covered in ants, Francis commanded them in the name of God to abandon the tree, which the insects miraculously did. The Conventino degli Osservanti, the first Francescan community in Citerna, was established here.
